To date, this is the highest number of GISD campuses that have been recognized as Capturing Kids’ Hearts schools in a single year.

Through the Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase Schools awards, the Flippen Group recognizes and celebrates campuses that go the extra mile each day, building an environment where students and staff feel safe and connected. The Flippen Group believes unsung heroes who produce exemplary outcomes in schools and pave the way for other schools to follow, need and deserve recognition for a job well done.

“This national recognition speaks to the district’s commitment to fostering spaces where students feel connected and safe, and in turn, eager to learn,” Chief of Staff Lindsay Harris said. “I am so proud of these fourteen schools for their intentional work and daily commitment to building relationships that bring these vibrant learning spaces to fruition.”

Capturing Kids’ Hearts campuses across the country were considered for these awards based on the following criteria: 1) nomination based on observation, 2) level of implementation of Capturing Kids’ Hearts processes by all staff as measured by online surveys, and 3) data demonstrating that Capturing Kids’ Hearts has made a significant improvement in attendance, discipline, climate/culture, or academics.

This year, S.T.E.P. became the first juvenile justice facility to be named a Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase School.

“I attribute the culture of our school to the framework we have developed together at S.T.E.P., driven by our priority goal to connect with our students and create a foundation that supports our work in all other areas,” S.T.E.P. Principal Tara Stewart said. “Students trust us enough to think and respond rather than immediately react, and along the way, they learn self-acceptance and experience small successes that build confidence.”
