Accounting Students Certified as Volunteer Income Tax Assistants

In November, Career and Technical Education (CTE) Accounting students from Georgetown ISD, Hutto ISD, Leander ISD and Pflugerville ISD gathered at Georgetown High School for Volunteer Income Tax Assistant (VITA) training as part of an Internal Revenue Services (IRS) initiative.

The initiative is designed to support free tax preparation service for the underserved through various partner organizations. This service helps low- to moderate-income individuals, persons with disabilities, the elderly, and limited English speakers file their taxes each year.

“The VITA certification is going to enable students to provide a valuable service throughout the community,” CTE Director Bretton Schultz said. “We are eager to see how students assist our local organizations in the spring with this future-ready skill.”

A total of 30 students attended the training, including 13 Accounting I and Accounting II students from GISD. This is the first year the VITA certification is available to students, and it is now one of 16 industry-based certifications offered through CTE.
