GISD to Host First Student-Led “Drone Fest” May 16

Georgetown ISD will host its first-ever “Drone Fest” on May 16 from 4:15-6:30 pm at the GISD Future Ready Complex (FRC), 5001 Airport Road, Georgetown.

The event, organized by Georgetown High School Junior Mathew Young, with support from GISD Innovation Facilitator Robert Thomas, will feature a virtual flight simulation, drone racing tournament, guest speakers, and more.

“I hope to expose other students and community members to what our drone program is all about,” Young said. “It’s a unique program that blends STEM education with practical working experience, and I hope students feel inspired to join after attending this event.”

Guests can also stop by the “educational stations,” where students will be leading drone 3-D printing and assembly demonstrations.

“From planning to piloting, Drone Fest is powered by students,” Thomas said. “My hope is that guests leave inspired by their creativity, leadership, and real-world skills on display.”

Drone Fest admission is free. Drone enthusiasts are encouraged to attend. You can learn more about the event on our website.

The drone program was launched in Georgetown ISD in 2021 and has more than 30 students enrolled today. Additionally, 25 students participate through an extracurricular club. Students enrolled in the program have the opportunity to earn their FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate, commonly referred to as the Part 107 license, allowing them to serve in roles as commercial drone pilots. Thanks to a recent FAA grant, the district is able to continue growing and expanding the program at its Future Ready Complex.
