Former Honduran National Soccer Player inspires students at Summer academy
For students in GISD’s Bilingual and ESL (English as a Second Language) programs, summer started with learning and connection at a newcomer academy and summer school. And at the height of the 2026 World Cup, they got a unique opportunity to meet former Honduran National Soccer Player Boniek García.
“When I visit schools, my mission is to inspire and motivate the students that I meet,” García said. “I want them to believe in the power of education and feel excited about the many opportunities that await them.”
During his professional career, García appeared in two World Cups with the Honduran National Team. In 2012, he made his MLS (Major League Soccer) debut with the Houston Dynamos and was named the 2012 MLS Latin Player of the Year. In his retirement, García found a passion for youth engagement and mentorship. Alongside motivational speaker Dr. Jose Luis Zelaya, the two travel to schools across the state to empower today’s young learners.
“What I want these young people to know is to never give up on your dreams, no matter how many people tell you that you can’t make it,” García said. “When I share my story with them, I remind them that I have had a lot of people who said that I couldn't do it…I persisted until I did, and look what was possible.”
Students heard García’s stories about perseverance and education, participated in a Q&A, and even had the chance to play a game of soccer alongside García.
“It was a memorable day celebrating the strengths, talents, and potential of our multilingual learners,” Multilingual Services Director Erica Galindo said. “We’re grateful for the lasting impact García and Dr. Zelaya’s visit will have on our students.”
